Academics

Overview

Ebenezer Preparatory School is an institution with a proven track record. Our graduates attend the leading high schools in New York City and are accepted into highly competitive colleges. We offer our students challenging academics and opportunities to participate in a number of extracurricular activities. Your student’s success is dependent largely on his/her involvement and academic commitment. Our qualified staff is eager to assist you every step of the way. We encourage you to develop positive relationships with our exceptional teachers and excellent support staff.

Our academics are guided by principles intended to cultivate high-achieving, disciplined and well-rounded students. We believe these six principles are most important to ensure student success.

  • Parents are the first and most important teachers. The more involved you are, the better your child’s chances of getting a good education. You can make the difference.
  • Your teaching must not stop when schooling starts. Some parents withdraw from involvement in education once their children reach school age. This is a mistake. Teachers cannot do a good job without your aid, support, and interest.
  • The early years build the foundation for all later learning. Make it sturdy. The first few years of life and then the first few years of school are critical. A solid education by eighth grade is a necessity or there will be trouble in high school and beyond.
  • Learning requires discipline; discipline requires values. Too many classrooms are disrupted by disrespectful, unruly children. Too many kids have not been taught the virtues necessary to succeed in school.
  • Television is the enemy of a good education. In many homes, TV is the greatest obstacle to learning. We urge you to shut it off from Sunday evening until Friday evening during the school year.
  • Aim high, expect much and children will prosper. No parent, school, or child is perfect, but we all rise toward the level of expectations. The surest way to learn more is to maintain and raise high standards.

Helpful Suggestions For Parents/Guardians

  • Please take your child to the eye and ear doctor for a complete checkup. If your child has glasses, please make sure that their prescription is up to date. If their glasses are broken, please get them repaired as soon as possible. Many students do poorly in school because of unchecked eyesight.
  • Please remove all television sets from your child’s room, or limit their television time during the year. If there is a special program that your child would like to watch, please make arrangements to have it taped for them, so they can watch it during the weekend. In addition, please monitor all of your child’s computer and cell phone activities. We are reminded daily of the perils of children that are left to their own devices.
  • Please remove all video games from your child’s possession and limit cell phone usage during the school semester. These games and extended time on cell phones distract your children from school work.
  • Please delegate a reasonable bedtime for your child. Encourage them to rise early and eat a good breakfast. This increases the desire to learn and enhances academic performance.
  • Please question your child daily about school notices and future events. Many notices are given out and they may not make it home. Please ask them about the school announcements and updates.
  • Please don’t always take your child’s word without talking to the teacher or the principal. We are open for meetings by appointment only and would love to clear up any misunderstandings.
  • Both parents are encouraged to take part in the education of your child. Please try to assist the teachers in enforcing these rules. Your child’s future at this school depends on it.
  • Let us work together to make your experience here a success. “It takes a village to raise a child.” Please adhere to these guidelines, and your child will not only succeed in Ebenezer but throughout the rest of their academic journey.

Testing and Grading

In addition to our challenging academic curriculum, Ebenezer Preparatory School participates in the annual New York State Common Core Standardized Examinations and the Stanford Achievement Tests.

Students are graded based on class work, homework, tests, quizzes, projects and class participation. The passing grade is 65%. There are three marking periods in the academic year and students receive one report card for each quarter. Each marking period, students are acknowledged for their academic excellence by being placed on the “Honor Roll.” To qualify for this distinction, students must have a passing grade in all subjects, earning an average of 85% or better.

Students are also recognized and rewarded for their character in the form of “Student of the Month.” To qualify for this honor, students must be shining examples to their fellow students in behavior, attendance, achievement, leadership and/or service.

Class Supply Lists

Each class requires supplies for the academic term. All supplies should be ready for the first week of school. During the year, please replenish your child’s school supplies as needed. Please ensure that your child is fully prepared at all times to maximize academic and personal success. Parents can schedule a meeting with their child’s teacher should they have any questions about the supply list.
